The Little Known Pro-Life Mount. Rushmore

Hidden among the hills of Santo Domingo, Colombia, is a little known, but monumental pro-life work of art. Known as Montaña Embarazada, or “Pregnant Mountain,” the massive sculpture depicts an unborn child in the womb etched directly into the landscape itself.

Created in 2012 by Colombian artist Dubian Monsalve, Montaña Embarazada transforms an ordinary mountainside into a striking image of an unborn child in the womb. The artist described the sculpture as both a tribute to his community’s resilience against violence and the humanity of unborn children in their mother’s womb.

What makes the artwork even more remarkable is how it was created. Monsalve completed the project in just 15 days, relying not on heavy machinery but on manual farming tools. His decision was intentional. By using the same tools employed by local farmers, he sought to honor their way of life and encourage them to remain connected to their land, their trade as farmers, and their Christian faith.

For Monsalve, the sculpture symbolizes both motherhood and the value of every human life. Reflecting on the meaning behind the work, he said:

“I believe that life is worth everything. So that symbol of a ‘pregnant mountain’ also represents the woman who gives life because life is precious from conception to its end.”

The monument also stands as a reminder that hope can emerge from even the darkest circumstances. After years of conflict that displaced many residents, Monsalve envisioned the sculpture as a symbol of renewal, rebirth, and a future rooted in life rather than violence.

Its message is simple yet profound: every human life has value, and even in places marked by suffering, hope and new life can emerge.

Monsalve has also encouraged other artists to take courage in their works, inspiring defense of human life with their talents. As he explained:

“Do not be afraid, it is a phrase that Jesus himself taught us … we cannot be silent, nor can we remain silent. I greatly enjoyed creating this work because it also encompasses a very universal message about life… a message to defend life from its beginning to its end, and that it is not worth giving up simply because of the world’s prejudices or criticisms.”

In a world filled with temporary headlines and passing trends, Colombia’s “Pregnant Mountain” remains a lasting reminder that art can inspire change. It can proclaim timeless truths about life, hope, and the enduring dignity of every human person.
