“Each of us is the result of a thought of God. Each of us is willed, each of us is loved, each of us is necessary.” Pope Benedict VI
Let me repeat these startling, significant words of Pope Benedict VI:
Each of us is the result of a thought of God. Each of us is willed, each of us is loved, each of us is necessary.
What did he mean by this? I think what Pope Benedict meant is that God thought up each of us before he formed us. You and I are not accidents of being, randomly created in the natural development of a purposeless Cosmos. He planned us and knew us long before we were created. Therefore, from the moment of conception in my mother’s womb, when he formed my body and endowed it with my soul, I became a person – a human being with unique DNA and a unique human soul. God willed each of us into being because he loves us dearly, even when we do bad things. Is this hard to believe? Just think how much you still love your pet dog or cat even when she gets into the garbage and makes a mess! How much more does God love you?
God has a great plan for each of us. In his eyes, every one of us is absolutely necessary. No one is replaceable. No one is expendable. No one is less valuable or worthy of life than another. No matter how tiny, or old, or sick, or sinful, or unable to do the things most of us take for granted, every person’s life has great worth because God made that person. And, as the psalms tell us, we are made in God’s likeness. This means he gave us some of his characteristics, such as compassion, a thirst for truth, and the ability to choose between good and evil.
Therefore, like God, we should choose good – we should choose Life (which he gives us freely), not death! With life, there is always at least a glimmer of hope. Choosing death is the ultimate hopelessness. Every person’s life is a priceless gift from God, to be valued, respected, and in all cases protected.
So, to be proudly pro-life, let us say to God and the whole world:
Yes! We choose Life, because life is always a good and precious gift.
