Louisiana Citizens Have Opportunity to Vote for a Pro-life Constitutional Amendment

NEW ORLEANS – For the first time in Louisiana’s history, voters will have the opportunity to vote on the abortion issue.

On Nov. 3, on the same ballot as the presidential election, this question will be awaiting Louisiana voters: “Do you support an amendment declaring that, to protect human life, a right to abortion and the funding of abortion shall not be found in the Louisiana Constitution?”

This amendment will be listed first among the constitutional amendments on the ballot.

Louisiana Right to Life Associate Director Angie Thomas, J.D., issued the following statement about the Love Life Amendment:

“We are seeing a disturbing trend in other states where the state supreme courts are finding a ‘right to abortion’ in their state constitutions, thus taking the issue out of the hands of the people and placing it into the judiciary. State Supreme Courts in 13 other states have found a right to abortion in their constitutions.

“These ‘mini-Roe’ decisions have been issued in obvious states such as California, Vermont and New York, but also recently in 2019 in the mostly pro-life state of Kansas. These can be drastic decisions that enable abortion on demand through all nine months of pregnancy.

“We have the opportunity to protect Louisiana from this fate through this constitutional amendment. The Love Life constitutional amendment would place language in the Louisiana Constitution that would prevent that from ever happening here. It ensures that the Louisiana Constitution is protected from state judges taking the abortion issue away from the people. Similar pro-life amendments passed in Alabama, West Virginia, Arkansas, and Rhode Island. Now, it’s Louisiana’s turn!

“This is a huge moment in history. We have the opportunity to be a voice for the voiceless and use our vote to protect the unborn!”
