Pro-Life Day Recap 2026

As the 2026 Legislative Session progresses, Louisiana Right to Life has been defending babies, safeguarding human dignity and medical ethics, and advancing measures that help support mothers and families.

As part of our public policy efforts, we were excited to mobilize citizens to stand for life at our Pro-Life Day at the Capitol on May 6! With strength, Louisianans both scheduled and spontaneously met with their state legislators and other elected officials and urged them to support our pro-life legislative package. Some of these legislators are strongly pro-life, but there are a number of legislators who certainly aren’t. Every conversation was important in advancing our pro-life bills and defeating continued attempts to weaken our pro-life laws.

One pro-life bill was heard in the House Health & Welfare Committee – SB 427 by Senator Thomas Pressly, who has previously authored other instrumental pro-life bills like the 2024 Abortion By Fraud Criminalization Act, strengthens ethical safeguards for organ donation while preserving the life-saving benefits of organ donation. The bill passed favorably out of committee and must now go before the House Floor for final passage before it is sent to the Governor for his signature.

Coincidentally, on this same day, a pro-abortion legislator attempted to pass a resolution that would create a study on Senator Pressly’s 2024 act that requires Misoprostol as a controlled substance. We were concerned that the resolution was an attempt to weaken the law, as the LA Department of Health and Board of Pharmacy both have reported that there have been no recorded issues with the 2024 law. We believed the measure was introduced to stir up controversy where there is none. Following the committee hearing, we discussed the issue with the legislator and he elected to not proceed forward based on information discussed in committee.

At the conclusion of the committee hearings, pro-life leaders were hosted in the Governor’s Press Room at the Capitol for a luncheon discussing important pro-life updates and reviewing our legislative efforts and action steps. Governor Jeff Landry thanked all leaders present and encouraged us to stay motivated in our defense of human life. He even noted the importance of voting in every election – an important part of keeping Louisiana proudly pro-life!

Louisiana Right to Life then served our “Everyone Deserves a Birthday” Cake in the rotunda. Legislators, Capitol staff, and the general public all crowded around our pro-life table while waiting for their slice of cake, which also provided time to visit 12 pregnancy centers and adoption agencies that filled the rotunda to its capacity.

These pregnancy centers and adoption agencies as well as those who attended Pro-Life Day at the Capitol were all recognized on the House Floor by Rep. Emily Chenevert and the Senate Floor by Sen. Heather Cloud. The two chambers both erupted in celebration of the support available in Louisiana for mothers and babies and the work being done to protect life in our great state.

Thank you to everyone who attended, testified, and who has been actively involved in our progress at the Capitol during this session!
